Both, undoubtedly, occupied very important places in the Spain of their days and now form a very important part of the History of Spain. They both decided to abdicate.<\/p>\n<p>Fernando I marked the beginning of the Castilian dynasty in Le\u00f3n, after the extinction of the dynasty initiated with <a title=\"Don Pelayo\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Don_Pelayo\" target=\"_blank\">Don Pelayo<\/a>. He took over the Crown of Le\u00f3n and immediately recovered the territories lost to the King of Pamplona, his brother the <a title=\"Garc\u00eda S\u00e1nchez III of Pamplona\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garc%C3%ADa_S%C3%A1nchez_III_de_Pamplona\" target=\"_blank\">King Garc\u00eda S\u00e1nchez III of Pamplona<\/a>. He also clashed with his brother the <a title=\"Ramiro de Arag\u00f3n\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ramiro_I_de_Arag%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\">King Ramiro of Aragon<\/a>. Both brothers, Garc\u00eda and Ramiro, lost their lives on battlefields against Fernando and their crowns were inherited by their respective sons, <a title=\"Sancho IV of Pamplona\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sancho_Garc%C3%A9s_IV_de_Pamplona\" target=\"_blank\">Sancho IV Garc\u00e9s el de Pe\u00f1al\u00f3n<\/a> y <a title=\"Sancho I of Aragon\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sancho_Ram%C3%ADrez_de_Arag%C3%B3n\" target=\"_blank\">Sancho Ram\u00edrez I of Arag\u00f3n<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He fought against the Muslims in their Taifas of\u00a0<a title=\"Taifa of Toledo\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taifa_de_Toledo\" target=\"_blank\">Toledo<\/a>, <a title=\"Taifa of Zaragoza\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taifa_de_Zaragoza\" target=\"_blank\">Zaragoza<\/a>, <a title=\"Taifa of Seville\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taifa_de_Sevilla\" target=\"_blank\">Seville<\/a> y <a title=\"Taifa of Badajoz\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taifa_de_Badajoz\" target=\"_blank\">Badajoz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2232\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2232\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/josemariacastillejo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Reinos-Taifas-a-mediados-S.-XI.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2232\" src=\"http:\/\/josemariacastillejo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Reinos-Taifas-a-mediados-S.-XI-300x233.png\" alt=\"Reinos Taifas a mediados del Siglo XI\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/josemariacastillejo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Reinos-Taifas-a-mediados-S.-XI-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/josemariacastillejo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Reinos-Taifas-a-mediados-S.-XI-65x50.png 65w, https:\/\/josemariacastillejo.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/Reinos-Taifas-a-mediados-S.-XI.png 694w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2232\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taifa Kingdoms in the mid-11th century<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It never attacked the <a title=\"Taifa of Denia\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taifa_de_Denia\" target=\"_blank\">taifa of Denia<\/a>The caliph of Denia had obtained for him as a gift the Cup of Jesus Christ at the Last Supper. Something I talked about in a <a title=\"The Holy Grail\" href=\"http:\/\/josemariacastillejo.com\/el-santo-grial-parece-que-si-que-esta-en-leon\/\" target=\"_blank\">previous post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Conquered\u00a0<a title=\"Coimbra\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coimbra\" target=\"_blank\">Coimbra<\/a> in Portugal in the year 1,064, and from there he went to take up <a title=\"Taifa of Valencia\" href=\"http:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taifa_de_Valencia\" target=\"_blank\">Valencia<\/a>But feeling very ill, at the end of 1,065, he decided to return to his home in Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>The detail of his abdication is described very well in the book.\u00a0<a title=\"The Grail Kings\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.es\/Reyes-Grial-Reino-Cordelia-Ensayo\/dp\/8415973292\" target=\"_blank\">The Grail Kings<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\"...one Monday, December 26, he orders to be dressed with all the royal attributes, such as the mantle and the golden crown and, in arms, accompanied by nobles and ecclesiastics, he throws himself at the feet of the altars blessed by the holy bodies. There, with voice still clear, he strips himself of the ornaments of his power in a public penance that culminates in the Visigothic manner with his tonsure. From that moment on, Ferdinand was considered civilly dead for the rest of his life. He was separated from the world, from the throne, from power. Thus departs, with humility and extraordinary faith, the Navarrese prince who one day became Count of Castile, King of Leon and arbiter of the Hispanic politics of his time.
